Organisational psychologist Adam Grant has discovered the secret to remembering absolutely anything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/internal.clientcommunity.com.au\/uploaded\/level\/moreimages\/2019_images\/201907-memory.jpg\" width=\"570\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Habitual forgetting of passwords is my biggest work productivity sin.\u00a0<\/span><span>I can easily lose 15 minutes (to say nothing of my sanity) successfully firing up all the accounts I use.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So I devoured\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/au\/podcast\/how-to-remember-anything\/id1346314086?i=1000434480571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this episode<\/a>\u00a0of Adam Grant\u2019s\u00a0<em>Work Life<\/em>\u00a0podcast \u201cHow to remember anything.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Adam is a very clever organisational psychologist who has created a very clever podcast, interviewing people who do what they love for a living.\u00a0 He also uncovers some fascinating stuff about our brains and how to make them tick more efficiently, especially when it comes to our work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He says having a good memory has been a valuable tool since caveman times, and that\u2019s largely because of three things: \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The 3 most important things a good memory brings to your work<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p><span>\u00a0<strong>A good memory helps you to establish expertise in uncertainty<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/span><span><br \/><\/span><span>\u201cIf a car salesperson knows safety specs at top of head you\u2019ll assume she knows what she\u2019s talking about.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span><strong>A good memory is essential for making fast decisions:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u201cAn emergency doctor doesn\u2019t have time to run a Google search before treating a cardiac arrest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span><strong>A good memory helps you build and maintain relationships:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cYou want your therapist to recall your world view was shaped by your weird family and that your boss hasn\u2019t forgotten all the good work you\u2019ve done prior to a performance review.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span>\u201cA great memory gives you an edge to make quick decisions because you have an entire library of successes and mistakes at your fingertips\u2026 \u00a0You can strengthen your memory like a muscle, and when you do it will pump up creativity and boost sales,\u201d says Adam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Who doesn\u2019t want more of that stuff in their life?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>The real \u201csecret\u201d to having a good memory<\/h3>\n<p><span>Helpfully, Adam doesn\u2019t just leave us with that thought; the rest of the episode is spent uncovering a solution via the work of American journalist and author, Joshua Poer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Joshua was sent by\u00a0<\/span><em>Slate<\/em><span>\u00a0Magazine to cover the United States Memory Championships where he spent time with people with remarkable abilities, ie they could repeat the sequence of a whole deck of cards after looking at them for just five minutes. Or remember the names of 100 strangers after meeting them the day before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The experience not only left Joshua with fascinating insights, he learnt how to cure his only bad memory in less than a year, and then\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.audible.com.au\/pd\/Moonwalking-with-Einstein-Audiobook\/B00FEZGM12?source_code=M2MORSH051016002X&amp;ipRedirectOverride=true&amp;ipRedirectOverride=true&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMIv5yGwuTE4gIVi4yPCh1PTA3_EAQYASABEgKkE_D_BwE&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote a book<\/a>\u00a0about it. Not a bad outcome for a junket, eh?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>\u2018People have done this for 2500 years\u2019<\/h3>\n<p><span>As Joshua told Adam, the \u201csecret\u201d to a good memory wasn\u2019t natural genius, but commitment to ancient mind-training practices. Some of which had been around for 2500 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIncredible memory is latent inside all of us if we use the right techniques to awaken them,\u201d Joshua says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The process is relatively simple and requires some imagination; \u00a0Joshua describes it as creating a memory palace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cPick a place you know well and mentally attach things\/words you want to remember to each image in that place,\u201d says Josh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe more memories and time and experiences spent in [our memory palace] the far more \u00a0sticky they become, because they\u2019re attached to all the other memories you have about that place.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Designing your own memory palace<\/h3>\n<p><span>Joshua\u2019s memory palace is his childhood home. So every time he wanted to remember a speech or a word, he\u2019d picture that word or phrase as existing inside a room of his childhood house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhen you close your eyes and walk back through each room of your house (or memory palace) the words you want to remember will be inside each room where you left them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Here is how Joshua explains remembering tp buy items on his shopping list:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSay I have a shopping list, I will picture myself inside my childhood house pouring a gallon of milk over my mum\u2019s head. I really picture that image of her, and how angry she would be. Because the more emotion and colour you attach to that image, the more likely you will be to remember it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Sound too good to be true?
