The caller says they\u2019re from the ATO. They want you to pay a debt (which you know nothing about), or are asking for your personal details.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"301\" src=\"http:\/\/internal.clientcommunity.com.au\/uploaded\/level\/2063\/3rdparty-16-jan-scam.jpeg\" width=\"570\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But it doesn\u2019t seem quite right. Maybe the caller:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>is aggressive<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>threatens that if you don\u2019t pay you will be arrested and sent to jail, or<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>tries to make you call another number outside normal business hours.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Or maybe you have received an email or SMS offering you a tax refund or asking for personal details, but it just smells wrong.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What to do if you think it is a scam?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You need to check it out.<\/p>\n<p>If you get a phone call, ask the caller for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>their full name and extension number<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>their team leader\u2019s full name and extension number.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can call us on\u00a0<strong>1800\u00a0008\u00a0540<\/strong>\u00a0to verify that the caller is from the ATO.<\/p>\n<p>If you receive an email or SMS, do not open any attachments or hyperlinks. You can report the email by forwarding the whole email to us at\u00a0<em>Report email fraud<\/em>. You should then delete the email or SMS.
